Company looking at wind farm potential

Suncor/Acciona Energy is in the early stages of investigating the potential for a wind farm development in the Armow area.

Coral Hulse, Suncor’s senior communications advisor, said she was approached by both the Kincardine economic development and planning committee and Bruce County economic development and planning department in November about the wind potential southeast of Tiverton.

“It’s still in the very early stages,” Hulse said.

A meteorological tower was erected a few weeks ago to measure wind in the region. The company is in the “land optioning” process, to gain access to land for testing and gauge what landowners would be open to leasing property for a turbine.

“It’ll be at least a year before we get a good sense if it’s something we’d want to pursue,” Hulse said.

The land is also a part of the Ontario Power Authority’s “orange zone” which faces electricity transmission constraints. Hulse said no project would be able to go forward until those restraints are lifted.

For now, Hulse said the company is getting to know the people in the area, sharing information and using the presence they’ve gained in their Ripley project to let people know they’re in the area.

“We want to be as open and transparent as possible,” she said. “So far the response has been really positive.”
