Central rallies against wind farms

A “Save Central” campaign is under way with two environmental groups joining forces to stop the Project Hayes and Mahinerangi wind farms.

The Upland Landscape Protection Society and Maniototo Environmental Society held a meeting in Alexandra on Wednesday night, to talk about the appeal process that they were both involved in.

About 35 people attended the meeting, led by landscape artist Grahame Sydney, and a campaign was launched to start raising money for Environment Court hearings in April and May next year.

Environmental society chairman Ian Manson said this was just the beginning for wind farms, with at least six other proposals planned for the area.

“If this one goes ahead it’s going to take off and we have to be prepared.

“Unfortunately this is where it starts,” he said.

The “Save Central” campaign sought to raise money for the appeals, with an estimated $80,000 to $150,000 needed for each project.
