Wind turbine plan granted extension

MONROE – The Hoosac Wind Project has been given more time to break ground.

The 20 wind-turbine project, which, according to plans, is to be erected on Bakke Mountain and Crum Hill in Monroe and Florida, received a special permit from the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals. It extends the time that project owner PPM, Inc., of Portland, Ore., has to complete access roads, moving the deadline from January 2008 to 2010.

Today, the environmental group Green Berkshires is appealing a ruling by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection that allowed the project to move forward.

The Project owner held a public discussion hearing at Florida’s Senior Center on Wednesday, Nov. 28, which about 40 people attended.

At the meeting, engineer Neil Habig said the combined output of the generators would be enough to power about 6,000 homes.
