Wind farm planned

A small wind farm should be generating electricity on a ridge top in southern Northumberland County in 2009.

Construction could begin in the spring on the $42 million project now that the Northumberland County commissioners approved a lease with Penn Wind of Sunbury.

The lease is for one year but contains provisions for 29 annual renewals. Rent will be based on the amount of electricity generated plus $10,000 annually for each of the seven turbines.

Juwi, a German company that has similar projects in Europe, is Penn Wind’s partner.

Penn Wind also has erected metrological towers in Clearfield, Columbia and Luzerne counties to obtain data for possible sites of additional wind farms.
