ABP looks wind energy potential

Port operator ABP is looking at the potential of wind energy generation in South Wales.

ABP (Associated British Ports) yesterday announced an agreement that will see Eclipse Energy evaluating the potential development of wind energy resources on land belonging to ABP South Wales.

The Gwynt Yr Hafan project will assess areas within the ports of Cardiff, Barry, Newport, Port Talbot and Swansea.

Over the next year Eclipse will be undertaking a number of environmental and technical feasibility studies as well as consulting with local stakeholders before putting forward proposals.

John Fitzgerald, ABP’s director for South Wales, said, “We have always considered our South Wales ports as potential sites for the development of new wind energy installations, and we are therefore very keen to see the results of Eclipse’s evaluation of our land.

“We believe our South Wales ports have the potential to become an energy hub for the renewable sector.”
