Evangeline looks to the wind

A wind farm is being explored as a possibility to assist in the economic development of the Evangeline region of Prince Edward Island.

Wind regime tests are underway, and will continue over the next year.

Louise Comeau, manager of La Société de développement de la Baie acadienne, told CBC News there will have to be community support for the project to go ahead.

If that happens, there will be ample opportunity for individuals to become involved.

“A green light from communities means residents could invest in the project, becoming shareholders,” said Comeau, speaking in French.

“That money could help development organizations in the area become less reliant on government funding.”

The committee is now looking at where a new wind farm might be located – it would have to be at least a kilometre from the nearest residence – how many turbines should be built and how much money might be generated from the proposal.
