Tests crucial for Bourke wind farm future

A second round of tests has been done to examine the impact a wind farm proposed for Bourke, in western New South Wales, would have on local communications.

Wind farm development company Babcock and Brown has plans for Bourke to be one of the only towns in the world powered completely by renewable energy.

It had hoped to start construction by now, however the Bourke Shire Council is yet to receive a development application for the $30 million project.

The council says the outcome of tests on the impact of wind turbines on communications from Mount Oxley is crucial to the success of the proposal.

The company plans to build seven turbines on Mount Oxley producing 18 megawatts of energy, which would be enough to power the entire town.
