Energy chief labels green targets 'ambitious'

Euan Robson, Chief Executive of the Scottish Sustainable Energy Foundation today said that the new target of generation of 50% of Scotland’s electricity by 2020 from renewables “is ambitious given the real technical difficulties still to be overcome”.

“It would be helpful to hear from the Scottish Government what proposals there are to smooth out fluctuating output from renewable plant.”

“Independent analysis suggests that there could be as much as 8000 Mega Watts in capacity terms of onshore wind either under construction, approved and awaiting construction or in the planning system. How is the Scottish Government to accommodate other renewables technology?”

“If additional generation is to be expected can Ministers guarantee sales to the rest of the UK especially if there is an unfavourable price differential?”

“And finally the Scottish Government will doubtless want to explain how it will offset any increased commodity price to domestic customers from renewable generation so as not to wreck the achievement of its own targets for the reduction in fuel poverty.”
