The proposed Viking Energy wind farm apparently is the only way forward for Shetland.
Let’s see what that means.
Environment, wildlife, not just birds, destroyed (red throated divers, protected under European law, and merlins, especially).
Massive release of carbon due to peatland destruction, and production of thousands of tons of concrete, construction of roads, cable trenches, silting up of burns, affecting fish in lochs etc. The list goes on and on.
How ironic that Shetland has just been named in National Geographic Traveller magazine as in the top four islands to visit in the WORLD!! If they only knew what was going on.
Tourism has just started to find its feet here, what sort of future would they hope for if this monstrous proposal gets planning permission? It’s very expensive getting here, but people still come back year in year out,
especially bird watchers. I doubt this would be the case if the wind farm went ahead. There is little knowledge of this wind farm it seem, south of Lerwick!
Viking Energy must like that. They’re quite the spin merchants.
This is just a taster of what this all means. We await the environmental impact assessment report and the collision report on how many red throated divers and merlins especially, will collide annually with the turbines. What a thought!
The views, wildlife, the very essence of Shetland itself will be lost, and a handful of people will be off counting their cash.
It’s up to the decent people in Shetland to stand up to the not so green, misguided people at Viking Energy.
