SYDNEY – A public hearing at the Cape Breton Regional Municipality’s Tuesday council meeting will be held to decide whether land near Lake Uist should be rezoned to allow a wind farm development.
Cape Breton Explorations Ltd., a developer of a successful wind power project at Lingan, is working on a new proposal that would include up to 44 wind turbines along the Bras d’Or Lakes and a hydroelectric plant powered by water from Lake Uist, near Irish Vale.
The project includes a hydroelectric power plant that will be about the same size as Nova Scotia Power’s facility at Wreck Cove. The pipes and the turbines will all be underground.
It’ll use wind turbines to generate electricity during the day for sale in Nova Scotia or export to New England, when electricity prices are high due to demand.
Council is largely behind the idea and a community meeting last Sunday in Loch Lomond didn’t present any opposition to the plan.
The turbines won’t be visible from Route 4 and the area will be covered in trees.
