Cape Wind parent drops plant plan

The parent company of Cape Wind Associates has withdrawn a plan to build an oil-fired power plant in Chelsea.

Chelsea Energy LLC, a subsidiary of Energy Management Inc., which also controls Cape Wind, filed notice of its decision not to build the plant with state officials Wednesday.

The plant had drawn criticism from opponents, who claimed it was hypocritical for a company touting renewable energy from a wind farm proposed for Nantucket Sound to also build a fossil fuel-burning plant in the low-income Boston suburb.

A draft environmental impact statement from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Minerals Management Service on Cape Wind’s proposal to erect 130 wind turbines in Nantucket Sound is due by the end of this year. A final report from the federal agency is expected out sometime next year.
