A New York-based firm has submitted the first proposal for a major wind farm off the Rhode Island coast.
The Providence Journal reports that Allco Renewable Energy Group wants to build between 235 and 338 wind turbines in state waters off Block Island and Little Compton.
The plan envisions turbines rising 345 feet above the water level, with blades 295 feet in diameter.
While Allco is hoping to start construction in early 2009, the project is likely to encounter significant regulatory delays. It has been five years since Cape Wind first proposed an offshore wind farm in Nantucket Sound, and the project has yet to receive a final permit.
Governor Don Carcieri’s administration unveiled a report in April that identified 11 possible sites for offshore wind farms as part of a plan to get 15% of the state’s energy from wind.
