Holy Cross gets grant for wind turbine study

WORCESTER – The College of the Holy Cross has received a $40,000 grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative Renewable Energy Trust for a study to determine the feasibility of constructing a wind turbine on campus.

The concept was initiated by students in an environmental mathematics class and the feasibility study will focus on the construction of an 850-kilowatt turbine. School officials said Holy Cross’s 174-acre hilltop location is ideal for a wind turbine, which could be used as an educational tool for its students.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Rev. Michael C. McFarland, president of Holy Cross, said, “We are grateful to Senator (Edward M.) Augustus and Representative (John P.) Fresolo for championing our grant proposal. The students’ findings and the support of our College Hill neighbors have been critical elements in moving this project forward.”
