Falmouth town meeting approves turbine

After deadline last night, town meeting members approved an article directing the selectmen to raise $4 million for a wind turbine.

The turbine will generate electricity to run the town’s wastewater treatment facility. The project, estimated to cost about $3.4 million, is expected to pay for itself, according to town officials.

“It’s a no-net impact to the town,” Assistant Town Manager Heath Harper said.

Megan Amsler, co-chair of the town’s energy committee, said the town will likely seek grant money and an agreement with the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative to buy the renewable energy credits generated by the turbine. Both will help the town afford the project.

The 43-article town meeting will continue tonight at the Lawrence School auditorium at 7 p.m.
