Angry residents opposed to a new wind turbine to be built in the Vale of Belvoir are gaining support for their cause.
The 200ft mast approved by Melton Borough Council last week, is to be erected in a field off Main Street, Normanton, but Belvoir Locals Oppose Turbines (Blot), feel it has not been fully consulted.
On Monday, members of the group met the Bottesford Parish Council to voice their concerns and as a result a new meeting has been arranged.
Spokesman Fiona Fairhurst said: “We are trying to get everyone’s opinion so we can represent the majority of people. We don’t think a lot of people really know what this mast means, we feel it’s been rushed through.”
The test mast will be in place for three months to a year measuring wind speed to gauge if it is a suitable spot for a windfarm.
Plans for the turbine, submitted by Oxfordshire firm Ridgewind, were approved at a development committee meeting on Tuesday November 6.
Project manager Ben Moore said: “This does not necessarily mean there will be windfarm. I think most of the opposition to this mast is actually opposition to a farm.”
The next meeting on Friday November 23, at Bottesford Village Hall, will have people from both sides of the debate to give their opinions. Ridgewind have been invited.
