CRYSTAL LAKE – Land acquisition for the 100-turbine wind farm proposed by Crystal Lake is complete but the project still must jump through some regulatory hoops before construction can begin.
Steve Stengel, director of corporate communications for FPL Energy, said the company is waiting to hear about a request for utility permits for overhead and underground utility lines in Hancock County.
FPL Energy is an affiliate of Juno Beach, Fla.-based Florida Power & Light Co.
The company wants to install transmission lines to bring power from the wind farm to the Lime Creek Power Station, which is located south of Manly.
The Hancock County Board of Supervisors hasn’t ruled on the request yet.
“We would hope to have that within the next few weeks,” Stengel said.
Also pending before the Iowa Utility Board is a request for transmission lines.
“That is still the big regulatory approval that is out-standing,” Stengel said.
“Our hope and certainly our expectation at this point is that we would get the approval that we need in Hancock County and the approval that we need from the Iowa Utility Board so that we could move forward with the construction at some point in 2008. We would also like to complete construction 2008.”
The turbines would each produce 1.5 megawatts of power.
