Wilmington plans meeting on wind project

WILMINGTON – The Selectboard will hold a special town meeting in December to gauge public opinion regarding the Act 250 hearing for the Deerfield Wind Project.

The project, headed by PPM Energy, would construct 17 wind turbines in Searsburg and Readsboro, each 408 feet tall, to produce alternative energy for the area.

At Wednesday night’s meeting, the board looked at the process required with the town’s attorney, Bob Fisher, and Windham Regional director Jim Matteau.

The town must submit the Act 250 criteria it wishes to be able to testify on. Town Manager Bob Rusten said, at this point, the town would be “doing it in a neutral way,” merely reserving the right to speak until residents tell the board what side to take.

An informational meeting last month began a fierce debate about the project. The town meeting would be more of an official way for residents to voice their opinions, and the issue will likely be put to a vote.
