The U.S. arm of British utility owner National Grid PLC spent nearly $740,000 to lobby the federal government in the first half of 2007, according to a disclosure form.
The London-based company, which in August completed its $7.3 billion acquisition of New York’s KeySpan Corp., lobbied on numerous issues including regulations for foreign investments in the U.S, energy taxes, climate change legislation, requirements that utilities get a portion of their electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind and energy efficiency, according to the disclosure form posted online Aug. 14 by the Senate’s public records office.
Besides lawmakers, the company lobbied the Energy and Interior Departments and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
National Grid serves more than 3.4 million natural gas and electric customers in New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Under a federal law enacted in 1995, lobbyists are required to disclose activities that could influence members of the executive and legislative branches. They must register with Congress within 45 days of being hired or engaging in lobbying.
