Sempra Energy said during its third-quarter earnings conference call that it is actively seeking to acquire land to expand its planned 250-MW La Rumorosa Wind project to 1,000 MW.
“We have secured land rights to develop about 250 MW and we are currently in negotiations with landowners in that same area to get additional landholdings to increase that development way beyond that,” said Sempra Energy Chairman and CEO Donald Felsinger.
“Having a good wind project is really about the quality of the wind, and this region of Baja California [Mexico], has a good wind resource and so we’ve been focused in on securing land for this contract that we’ve signed with Southern California Edison Co., but also to secure land to build beyond that,” Felsinger said. “And it’s our expectation to, in fact, be able to secure more land and have us a bigger development.”
La Rumorosa is Sempra’s first foray into wind.
