North Devon is under siege – that is the reaction of wind farm opponents near South Molton, to news of a third wind energy proposal for the southern edge of Exmoor.
The statement by Two Moors campaigners followed the submission of a planning application for a nine-turbine development to the west of Knowstone, by developers Airtricity.
North Devon District Council has already received applications for two turbines at neighbouring Cross Moor, and nine at Batsworthy Cross.
Campaign group secretary, Caroline Harvey, said that a further four-turbine planning application by Coronation Power at Bickham Moor was expected to go to Mid Devon District Council within weeks.
The total of wind turbines being proposed for the area will be 24,” she said.
“On top of the 22 recently granted approval at Fullabrook, it’s horrendous. The cumulative effects, especially on Exmoor National Park will be disastrous.
“Just because the Government has given approval for Fullabrook, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they should be approved here too,” she added.
“Fullabrook’s approval takes a considerable weight off Devon’s renewable energy targets and relieves the pressure on unsuitable sites around Knowstone.
“The public are being forced to accept the building of power stations that in effect only generate their rated output for three months of the year, and save much less CO2 than claimed.”
n The proposed offshore wind farm, the North Atlantic Array, in the Bristol Channel, will be among issues to be discussed at the Devon Maritime Forum’s meeting in Barnstaple tomorrow (Thursday).
