HANCOCK – The wind-powered electricity turbine is working again at the summit of Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort after week-long repairs mid-October remedied a bearing malfunction within the hub.
The fix cost the General Electric Co., which is the turbine’s manufacturer, more than $640,000.
“I don’t want to jinx myself, but she’s been working fine,” James P. Van Dyke, president of environmental sustainability, said on Tuesday, laughing.
A crane removed the turbine’s rotor assembly and blades on Oct. 9 and replaced them again on Oct. 15.
“It would have taken just five days if not for the weather,” Van Dyke said.
Repairmen tested the turbine on Oct. 16 and 17 and then let it run.
“There’s been one little error message about the heaters in the electrical cabinets, but nothing that has been a critical operational item,” Van Dyke said.
The turbine has produced 210,553 kilowatt hours of electricity so far this month. Williams College students will be visiting the turbine on Saturday as part of a day-long rally raising awareness about environmental pollution. GE designed the turbine to generate enough energy to reduce 7.11 million pounds of greenhouse gases a year, which would be the equivalent of 383,000 gallons of diesel fuel.
