Howard County commissioners eye reinvestment zones for wind turbines

Five companies want approval of three reinvestment zones in Howard County to install wind turbines, County Judge Mark Barr said.

Commissioners discussed the idea at their meeting Monday.

Barr said the companies are Iberdrola, Airtricity, Invenergy, Padoma and Duke, which want to install a total of 200 turbines in the southern, northeastern and northwestern part of the county.

He said the tax abatement the companies want is still in the discussion stage, but the firms want an answer by December. The next time it could come up at a meeting is in November, Barr said.

The county currently has 30 turbines.

The companies would like to start construction at the beginning of 2008, Barr said, and want the tax abatement approved in December.

“It’s going to be a boom to our county,” Barr said of the possible wind turbine installation.

In other business, commissioners approved hiring Dinosaur Valley Construction Inc. of Glen Rose as its construction manager on the proposed 96-bed, $11.57 million jail.

Early voting has begun on the bond issue and runs through Nov. 2. Election day is Nov. 6.
