Windfarm campaign

The campaign to stop a windfarm being built on the edge of a Cumbrian village is growing in strength, it has been claimed.

Five turbines – each more than 100m high – are planned for a ridge to the south of Westnewton, near Aspatria.

The parish council opposes the scheme and its chairman John Ryden said that visitors to a public exhibition in the village backed its view.

He said: “We had already been door-to-door and we were confident that our stance reflected local opinion. Now we are certain of it. There were one or two people who had been non-committal but when they saw photo-montages of what the windfarm would look like in the landscape, they were shocked.

“Broadview Energy Developments Limited, who are behind the project, are holding their own exhibition tomorrow night and I would urge villagers to turn up and make their views known.”

The exhibition takes place in the village hall between 5.30pm and 8pm.

People now have until October 29 to make representations to Allerdale council, the planning authority.

Mr Ryden, who has lived at Westnewton for more than 30 years, said: “These wind turbines would dominate this village.

“They would be taller than those at Bothel which are really in your face.

“They would be visible from all over the village and people also have issues with the noise they would make, light flicker, transport routes during construction and other issues.”
