Windfarm rush

The bwea (the windfarm association) is urging the Government to remove the blockages in the planning system relating to windfarms, as there is a serious danger of the UK missing the target of sourcing 10 per cent of its electricity from renewables by 2010.

The period from obtaining planning consent to a windfarm becoming operational is three years, and with over 200 onshore wind projects locked in the planning system, this target is fast becoming a dream.

BWEA chief executive Maria McCaffery states that “the Government at all levels must not be afraid of NIMBYs”, and calls on all political parties to tackle their own NIMBY local councillors to get applications passed.

So the rush to make a fast buck from windpower and its huge subsidy is on; never mind about our green and pleasant countryside.
