MPs slam wind farm proposal

Two local MPs have supported the Stop Linton Wind Farm Action Group, after visiting the site of the proposed wind farm.

South east Cambridgeshire MP Jim Paice met the action group recently.

Mr Paice visited Linton Zoo in order to discuss the concerns of zoo keeper Kim Simmons, who was worried about the effect the development would have on the zoo.

Mr Paice also offered guidance after talking to the action group committee.

He said: “Everyone supports wind farms but most people don’t want them on their doorstep”.

After studying the location, and considering the requirements for an effective wind farm, Mr Paice concluded there was ‘very little evidence that Cambridgeshire meets that requirement’.

Sir Alan Haselhurst, MP for Saffron Walden, also slammed the proposed development.

Mr Haselhurst met the action group and after viewing the site he said: “Having walked to the best point to view the site of the proposed Linton Wind Farm, I am absolutely clear about the blot on the wonderful landscape it would be”.

He added: “Any environmental benefit from the energy generated would be totally outweighed by such an ugly intrusion.”

The Stop Linton Wind Farm campaign group has gathered a lot of support, since its protests at the wind farm exhibition.

Enertrag UK, the company behind the plans for the wind farm, believes that the eight wind turbines, each measuring 125m tall, would produce enough energy to supply nearly 9,000 homes.

It has also revealed plans to set up a trust fund which would donate £15.000 yearly to local causes.
