Petition lodged over road

ARARAT – Residents of Ararat Rural City who use the Buangor-Ben Nevis Road have lodged a petition with council against Pacific Hydro using the road to transport the tower components to the site of the proposed Crowlands Windfarm.

The Crowlands Windfarm is proposed to be built within the Pyrenees Shire.

The tower components are manufactured overseas and transported from the ports in Melbourne and Geelong to the site.

Council reported that the developers have been in consultation with VicRoads to determine the most appropriate route for delivering the components to the site and the preferred route is via the Western Highway, then the Buangor-Ben Nevis Road to the Ararat-St Arnaud Road.

The Buangor-Ben Nevis Road is a local road controlled by the Ararat Rural City Council and Council’s consent to use the road is required.

The petitioners requested that the road not be used to transport the components on the grounds that it may become unsafe and suggested an alternative route of Alfred Street, Grano Street, Burn Street, Pyrenees Highway and Ararat-St Arnaud Road.

Since the petition was tabled, Council has been advised by VicRoads that there is a possibility that components will be off-loaded at Portland and not Melbourne or Geelong and would not require transport along the Buangor-Ben Nevis Road.

A decision by council on consent for the transportation of windfarm components along the road was deferred pending further advice from VicRoads on the actual route to be taken.

Pacific Hydro has submitted a planning application for the Crowlands Windfarm with the State Government, which is currently on display for a period of six weeks.
