Maryland governor to visit wind-power sites

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) – A spokesman says Governor Martin O’Malley will inspect proposed wind-power sites and view gypsy moth damage Friday in far western Maryland.

Three wind farms have been proposed in the region but none has been built, partly due to objections that the giant turbines could harm wildlife and destroy habitat for rare and endangered species.

O’Malley signed a bill in April that helps wind-power developers by eliminating some environmental reviews.

The governor also will tour some of the 45,000 acres defoliated by gypsy moth caterpillars this year in Garrett County.
