Meridian granted consent for giant wind farm

State power company Meridian Energy has won resource consent to build a huge wind farm in Central Otago, but that is not the last word on the $1.5 billion project. The Central Otago District Council and the Otago Regional Council yesterday issued a resource consent to Meridian for a proposed 176-turbine wind farm, called Project Hayes, said to be the biggest in the world. Project Hayes has high-profile opponents such as All Black Anton Oliver, now in France, Central Otago . . . Complete story »

Billionaire's district for private project almost a sure bet

LUBBOCK, Texas—It won’t take long to count the votes next week on a plan that would help billionaire T. Boone Pickens deliver Panhandle water to growing north Texas communities. There’s even less doubt about the outcome. Just two people—Pickens’ ranch manager and his wife—will cast ballots Nov. 6 to confirm the creation of a Fresh Water Supply District in Roberts County. Alton Boone, who manages Pickens’ vast Canadian River Valley ranch, and his wife Lu live within the eight-acre water . . . Complete story »

Bluewater would cap wind plant costs

Bluewater Wind is willing to take on some of the financial risk of building a wind-power farm off the Delaware coast. This comes after the Delaware Public Service Commission staff report suggested costs of buildng the plant would hit rate-payers hard. The proposal also calls for a gas-fired power plant to back up wind generators. The initial proposal had indicated the project would bring stability to electric bills. The report indicated Delmarva customer bills would go up by more than . . . Complete story »

Concern over future wind farm projects

Meridian Energy has used the announcement of the approval of its 176-turbine wind farm in Central Otago to highlight concerns about the interisland power link. The country’s biggest power generator is worried about how progress on the $1.5 billion Project Hayes would be affected by management issues surrounding the electricity link between the North and South Islands. Meridian’s chief executive, Keith Turner, said the charging regime for the high voltage direct current link disadvantaged new South Island generation projects. It . . . Complete story »

Rossendale’s rural location could see it “surrounded” by windfarms in the future, according to a councillor. Landscape main factor in wind farm opposition

Project Hayes panel chairman John Matthews has released a 12-page statement explaining his reasons for voting against the Lammermoor wind farm proposal. Mr Matthews, a Queenstown barrister, voted with fellow commissioner David McMahon to approve the Otago Regional Council consents required for the project, but against all four commissioners for the Central Otago District Council consents required. He was chiefly concerned with landscape values, the appropriateness of the development and the setting of precedent, including his statement within yesterday’s decision . . . Complete story »

Ill wind blows in Savoy

To the editor: In response to your 10/26/2007 article “Wind talks lead to yelling match,” the town officials of Savoy were lucky that only a yelling match took place at their recent town hearing. It would have been more appropriate if the crowd raised their pitchforks and called for the head of their king! The fact that a resident was not allowed to ask a question at a public hearing should frighten all of Savoy’s citizens because, under Massachusetts state . . . Complete story »

Jiminy Peak wind turbine up and running again

HANCOCK – The wind-powered electricity turbine is working again at the summit of Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort after week-long repairs mid-October remedied a bearing malfunction within the hub. The fix cost the General Electric Co., which is the turbine’s manufacturer, more than $640,000. “I don’t want to jinx myself, but she’s been working fine,” James P. Van Dyke, president of environmental sustainability, said on Tuesday, laughing. A crane removed the turbine’s rotor assembly and blades on Oct. 9 and replaced them . . . Complete story »
