Wisconsin Public Service Corp. is in negotiations to buy a 99-megawatt wind farm planned for Howard County.
The Green Bay-based utility and enXco, the wind farm’s California-based developer, confirmed the sale talks are under way in a statement released Monday. They expect to reach an agreement before the end of 2007.
Wisconsin Public Service had previously said only that it planned to build or buy wind energy capacity within the territory of the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator, a regional transmission system overseer.
Wisconsin Public Service Corp. Director of Renewable and Special Projects Rob Benninghoff said enXco came forth with a viable project, and has a proven track record with involvement in nearly 20 wind farms.
Benninghoff said Wisconsin Public Service plans to file for regulatory approval for the project with state regulators in October if negotiations are successful.
The California company will provide turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services for the entire wind farm project.
Wisconsin Public Service is a investor-owned utility serving 429,000 electric customers and 312,000 retail natural gas customers in northeastern and central Wisconsin, and an adjacent portion of Michigan.
