Commission sub-committee: Deny Cape Wind permit

BARNSTABLE – A Cape Cod Commission subcommittee will recommend to the full Commission that they deny a permit requested by Cape Wind Associates’ proposal to connect 130 wind turbines in Nantucket Sound to land-based transmission lines.

The unanimous subcommittee vote this afternoon was based on the lack of information in the application for the permit submitted by Cape Wind to the Cape’s regional land-use agency.

The missing information included a detailed emergency response plan for hazardous materials spills and more data on the impact of the project on eel grass beds. The commission subcommittee also asked for more time to make its decision but Cape Wind representatives did not agree to an extension.

The commission is reviewing the wind farm proposal as a development of regional impact. Such projects because of their size or because a town refers the project to the agency, under state law, must be approved by the commission.

The subcommittee will finalize its recommendation this week and is expected to present their findings to the full 15-member board of commissioners in October.
