Area residents wishing to learn more about a proposed wind farm on Nuttby Mountain are invited to a ratepayers meeting on Wednesday.
The 7 p.m. meeting at the North River Fire Hall was called by Colchester County councillor Ron Cavanaugh in response to inquiries about the project. Although Cobequid Area Wind Farms Inc., recently held a public consultation session on its proposal, Cavanaugh said residents are still seeking more clear-cut information.
The company is proposing to erect between 15 and 22 wind turbines on Nuttby Mountain, the highest point in mainland Nova Scotia.
“It’s a massive project, that’s for sure,” said Cavanaugh, of the effort that would see a lot of heavy equipment being transported along Highway 311 and up the Old Nuttby Road.
“I think they’re a great idea but I think there should be guidelines in place so they don’t disturb the rural lifestyle.”
Nova Scotia Power has called for proposals for alternative energy sources and Energy Minister Bill Dooks said this week that by 2013 “… nearly 20 per cent of all Nova Scotia’s electricity will come from green sources like wind.”
If approved, the Nuttby project is expected to cost up to $100 million and is to generate from 30 to 45 megawatts of electricity per year, enough to power between 10,000 and 14,000 homes.
