Wind turbines threatened to blow other issues off the agenda at the annual conference of the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership on Friday.
There is growing concern at the number of wind turbines being proposed in areas close to the AONB.
Richard Leafe, chief executive of the Lake District National Park Authority, urged the AONB Partnership to create its own sustainable energy policy based on natural resources, as an alternative to large scale developments such as wind farms and wave-power barrage schemes.
This could include protection and even extension of the Solway peat bogs which form an untapped clean energy source.
Jack Ellerby, chairman of the North West Rural Affairs Forum, agreed that the Solway peatlands formed a “fundamental resource” that could be utilised.
The Silloth conference heard that a sustainable energy policy would enable those concerned with protection of the environmentally sensitive Solway area to tap into regional funding and control development policy more effectively.
Mr Ellerby added: “We do not want large scale wind farms on our doorstep, and we certainly do not want them in our AONB.”
