UPPER NAPPAN – Fearing potential legal action Cumberland County is refusing to write a letter in support of Gulf Shore residents fighting a proposed wind farm in their area.
“It’s not that council’s not empathetic to the residents of that area, but we have a bylaw and the developers go by that bylaw and invest their money according to that bylaw. If we were to try to give any influence on the negative development of that project we could be liable for legal action,” Warden Keith Hunter said following council’s September session here Wednesday.
Atlantic Wind Power is proposing a wind farm with between 20 and 27 110-metre tall turbines near the Gulf Shore.
Coun. Kathy Langille presented council a petition bearing 1,169 signatures on behalf of the Gulf Shore Preservation Association. While it unanimously accepted the petition, a motion to send a letter of support was voted down by a 6-4 margin with only Langille and councillors Gerald Langille, Ernest Gilbert and Kathy Redmond supporting a letter.
Hunter said the county’s bylaw, passed earlier this year, is much better than what was there before, adding that the existing setbacks are much better than having no controls or restrictions.
