Controversial plans for a five-turbine wind farm in Rainworth have been given the green light by planning chiefs today (Tuesday).
Energy giant Npower Renewables will site the 125m-high wind turbines at Lindhurst Farm, off Blidworth Lane, in a bid to create greener energy for at least 4,700 homes.
The proposals were discussed by councillors at Newark and Sherwood District Council this evening who voted to allow the plans, in line with recommendations from planning officers.
Local residents have come out in force against the plans but there has also been strong support for the project from green campaign group the Sustainable Energy Alliance (SEA).
Among those opposing the project have been Mansfield MP Alan Meale, Sherwood MP Paddy Tipping and county councillors Helen Holt and Chris Winterton, while Mansfield District Council has also put in objections saying the turbines would be too high and too near local homes.
And residents formed the Lindhurst Windfarm Action Group and collected 2,500 signatures against the plans, fearing the impact the massive structures would have.
But the scheme has received backing from SEA campaigners, who have sent in 3,000 letters of support to planning chiefs. They say ‘green’ energy is essential to tackle climate change and the windfarm is an ‘exciting opportunity’ for the area.
