Council says no to turbines

A parish council is demanding an end to wind turbines in Fenland, saying they are a “blot on the landscape, spoiling sunsets and the natural beauty of the Fens”.

Those comments are the opinion of Doddington Parish Council, which will raise its objections next Wednesday when Fenland District Council’s planning committee consider plans for a 70 metre high wind mast at Hakes Drove, West Fen, on the outskirts of March.

The mast application is the first step towards deciding if the area is ripe for 16 wind turbines which are proposed by Iberdrola Energy, part of Scottish Power.

But Doddington parish councillor Gerald Bishop said: “We discussed the application at our last meeting and we felt enough is enough.

“We as a council have always supported turbines in the past but we feel that Fenland is becoming a target for turbines.

“We have taken our share to look after the environment and it is time for somewhere else to do the same.

“There comes a time when enough is enough – and we think have got enough. If we don’t do something about it they will be everywhere.”

The council has also received two letters from people saying the turbines are “inefficient and are blighting the landscape of Fenland.”

Planning officers say approval of the wind mast does not automatically mean the 16 turbines will be acceptable, but the mast is needed to gather data.

Hamish Laird’s report to councillors says the mast “proposes a temporary structure for data gathering over a limited period, to assess whether the provision of a wind farm would be viable in this location.
