A proposal to put up a test mast to gauge wind speeds at the former Pulham airstation has been refused planning permission.
Green power company SLP Energy sparked a storm of protest when it revealed earlier this year that it wanted to develop a windfarm at the site near Harleston to generate clean, green, renewable energy.
A protest group was set up by residents of the four neighbouring villages after claims that the seven proposed 125m-high turbines would blight their communities.
The company wanted to use the 60m-high test mast to gather data for an 18-month period in order to establish whether the site was suitable.
Parish councillors have been consulted and are divided over the issue.
South Norfolk Council received 222 letters of objection from residents and two letters of support.
Planning officers had recommended the mast be approved with conditions, but it was refused planning permission at a meeting of the council’s south-west area planning committee which was attended by more than 150 people on Tuesday.
