Wind turbines were the hot topic of discussion as Eggborough residents flocked to an information event about a proposed new wind farm site near the village.
Organised by leading UK-based renewable energy developer Your Energy, the Eggborough Village Hall event last Thursday aimed to gauge local reaction to the potential installation of ten wind turbines at nearby Stubbs Bridge, which could power up to 10,000 homes
The event, together with one held at neighbouring Knottingley Leisure Centre the day before, attracted more than 180 residents.
Your Energy senior development manager Matt Kelly said: “Both events went well and we received a good mix of positive feedback. We were pleasantly surprised at the response and how friendly and understanding most people were towards the idea of a wind farm development in this area.”
But opposing councillor John McCartney said: “I spoke to a few people at the event and they were both shocked and concerned at the sheer size of the proposed wind farm.
“The turbines will be absolutely huge and overlook the M62 motorway, which could cause traffic problems and even accidents as motorists slow down to look.
“Your Energy prides itself on its Burton Wold wind farm in Kettering, but it’s not as efficient as it claims, and who’s to say this one will be any different? More than £600 million of taxpayers’ money goes into these schemes, and the landowner could earn between £20,000 and £75,000 per turbine per year so it’s no wonder they’re keen to get the go-ahead.”
