Protect Eagles by Stopping Shaffer Mountain Wind Project

Bedford, Pennsylvania 09/11/07 – Tony Ciarlante, President of the Green Alternative Solutions Project (GRASP) announced today that the organization has completed the extension and revision of their Shaffer Mountain Wind Project Report for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

On August 28th GRASP President Tony Ciarlante presented testimony opposed to granting GAMESA, Inc. a license to construct a wind project in Somerset County to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

GRASP, a promoter of environmentally friendly alternative energy programs is opposed to constructing the 17 mile long GAMESA wind project through the pristine Shaffer Mountain wilderness area. In his initial testimony to the PA Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, GRASP President Tony Ciarlante cited the devastating impact the construction would have upon the migrating bat and raptor population on Shaffer Mountain.

“Common sense dictates that erecting wind turbines in the path of migrating birds puts the birds at greater risk, and frankly, we are stupefied that the proponents of this project can’t see that and are clinging stubbornly to their plan”, Ciarlante said.

Thousands of migrating raptors including American Bald Eagles, Eastern Golden Eagles and Hawks transit the Shaffer Mountain ridge every spring and fall and would be put at great risk by the whirling blades of the GAMESA wind turbines.

Studies at wind farms in California, West Virginia, Wisconsin and New York have revealed the deaths of thousands of birds and bats annually by the 400 foot high spinning propellers of the wind turbines.

GRASP’s revised and extended remarks to the GRASP Shaffer Mountain Wind Project Report are being reviewed and finalized by GRASP Project Manager Howard Briddelle for submission to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection on September 26, 2007.
