Hamlin board to hold wind tower meeting today

The Hamlin Town Board will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. tonight to discuss recommendations from the town’s Wind Tower Committee.

The first hour of the meeting will be devoted to public questions, while the second hour will be a board discussion of the committee’s recommendations.

In January, a 9-member committee started investigating information regarding industrial wind turbines in response to a developer erecting monitoring equipment in northern parts of the town to determine if the area is suitable for a wind farm.

Developers are considering a farm of up to 50 turbines in an area roughly bounded by Redman, Cook, Monroe-Orleans County Line and Morton roads.

In March, the town enacted a moratorium on wind farm development while the committee looked into what, if any, regulations the town should place on wind farms.

The final wind committee report was issued in July. The group’s original deadline was December, but Town Supervisor Dennis Roach asked the committee to speed their work amid concerns that the state could soon pass laws that would preempt local control over wind towers and wind farm placement.

The town board is reviewing the wind committee’s recommendations in order to enact laws regarding issues such as how far such structures should be from neighboring properties, environmental impact, noise levels, aesthetics, lighting, electromagnetic interference, safety and more.

A complete copy of the wind tower committee report, as well as a minority report that disputes some conclusions in full committee report, is available at www.hamlinny.org/wind-tower.html.

The meeting will be held at Town Hall, 1658 Lake Road.
