Plans for five wind farms on a moor have been described as “environmental vandalism on a grand scale” by a European MP.
Conservative MEP Struan Stevenson has joined a protest group and RSPB Scotland in opposing proposals for Dava Moor, near Grantown-on-Spey.
A public meeting is being held in the Highland town on Thursday following a protest at ruined Lochindorb Castle.
Save Our Dava campaigners said 130 turbines have been proposed.
Speaking ahead of the meeting in the Benmhor Hotel, Grantown-on-Spey, Mr Stevenson said he had asked EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas to investigate alleged breaches of European directives.
The MEP said: “Cumulatively, the five wind farms will amount to one of the largest-scale wind power projects in Scotland, if not Europe.
“It is part of our rich landscape and cultural heritage, with Lochindorb Castle, a rare island fortress dating back to the 13th Century, perched on an island in the middle of the loch.”
Save Our Dava said the moor provided habitat to wild birds such as capercaillie, golden eagle, osprey, buzzard, red throated diver, lapwing, skylark and raven.
