The Town of Babylon, with support from the Village of Amityville, cited a centuries-old document in saying it will deny wind-farm developer FPL Energy or other contractors access to town barrier beaches and the bay bottom for a proposed wind-energy transmission cable.
The officials plan to hold a press conference at 11 a.m. at West Gilgo Beach Thursday to announce their strategy to block the proposed cable.
The move comes amid heightened criticism of the Long Island Power Authority project by local and state legislators and citizens groups. LIPA Chairman Kevin Law has expressed concern about the project’s economics.
The town will “block any effort by FPL or future developers to install a transmission cable through the barrier beach and bay bottom of the Town of Babylon,” Supervisor Steve Bellone’s office said in an alert Wednesday.
The town plans to base its authority of the bay bottom to a document called the “Nicoll Patent of 1666,” which it said was “affirmed by the Dongan Patent of 1688.”
