Burnham-On-Sea’s MP, David Heathcoat-Amory, has this week voiced his concerns over the application to build a wind farm on the outskirts of the town.
Mr Heathcoat-Amory spoke as the public inquiry into the controversial wind farm application entered into its third week.
He said: “I support the objectors to this wind farm application as it is a completely inappropriate site. These large turbines are very intrusive and the area is flat so they would be visible for miles around.”
“The thousands of holiday visitors we welcome do not want to see an industrialised landscape, scarred with these steel and concrete towers.”
“I hope the planning inspector will respect majority local opinion and not impose this development on us just because of central government targets. There are other, better ways of combating climate change.’
The appeal is expected to last until this Thursday – some four days later than originally planned.
Ecotricity wants to build five wind turbines – each one almost 80m high – on land off Stoddens Lane, but its hopes were dashed last August when Sedgemoor planners turned down the scheme.
A dozen campaigners from the Knoll To Wind Farm group have submited evidence in their fight against the application, and pressure group FORCE (Families For Clean Energy) has argued in favour of the plan.
