TOWN OF COHOCTON – The first wind farm project for the Southern Tier was approved last week by the New York State Public Service Commission.
This not good news for people who are worried about the noise and traffic a wind farm will bring, but town officials say construction on the Cohocton Wind Power Project may begin as early as this week.
Town supervisor Jack Zigenfus says UPC, the development company, is waiting for building permits. He says these permits should be approved by Tuesday. Once the permits are given, the company can move forward.
“The company will begin actual excavating of the land. Probably putting in their preliminary roads to the different sites,” says Zigenfus.
Zigenfus says 50 wind mills will be placed on the hills, but he stresses that all 50 will not be in the same region. The purpose of the wind farm is to bring in efficient energy and to be less dependent on foreign resources. Zigenfus hopes the project will be completed in 2009.
