Altalink to make transmission line announcement

Altalink may be making headway in its bid to install a 1,250 megawatt-capacity transmission line that will transport power generated by Pincher Creek wind farms to Lethbridge.

“Right now we’re just in the final stages of something,” AltaLink spokesman Scott Schreiner told The Echo recently.

He declined to elaborate, but added that details would be made available soon.

A proposal to run the line underground was examined in March but ultimately deemed infeasible due to its unproven life span and high anticipated cost.

However, Schreiner explained at the time that the need for the line was critical.

“Growth is creating a greater demand for electricity,” he said. “Alberta’s electricity demand is greater than any other province.”

As a result, AltaLink has continued to search for alternatives and has been in negotiations with officials on the Piikani reserve and others owning land where the proposed line would pass through.

A full report of any developments will be published in next week’s Echo.
