Plans for a new nine-turbine windfarm near Greystoke would produce enough electricity for more than 12,000 homes, the energy company claimed this week.
Berrier Hill Wind Energy Ltd has submitted a planning application to Eden Council to harness the wind energy resource at Berrier Hill, over a mile west of the village.
The company is a subsidiary of West Coast Energy Limited and has been set up to develop the wind farm.
The planning application is for nine wind turbines to provide clean green electricity for local use.
The company says the windfarm will each year produce sufficient electricity to meet the needs of over 12,581 homes.
They say the scheme will also provide local benefits associated with the construction and operation of the wind farm. It is proposed to establish a Community Trust Fund to provide additional benefit for the local area.
Samantha Crosby, planning and dvelopment manager for West Coast Energy said: “Environmental and technical considerations have played a key role in the design of the wind farm and the final layout has been developed through a process of formal environmental assessment, which has included surveys and evaluations by independent consultants as well as consultations with Eden Council and statutory and non-statutory bodies.
“The long-term objective of this wind farm is to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, widely recognised as the primary cause of global warming which is considered to be the most serious problem facing the world today.”
The wind farm would play a role in the Governments target of 10 per cent of electricity being generated from renewable energy by 2010, and help meet Cumbria’s target of 210 MW of on-shore wind energy generation by 2010.
A public information exhibition is to be held at Greystoke village hall on August 14 between 2pm and 8pm. The exhibition will feature a display and there will be an opportunity to discuss all aspects of the proposals with company representatives.
