Governor disappointed in wind project approval

Vermont Governor Jim Douglas says he’s disappointed with the Public Service Board’s decision yesterday approving a new wind power project in the Northeast Kingdom town of Sheffield.

The governor says he remains opposed to industrial-scale wind power projects on Vermont’s ridge lines, and he says the 16 turbines, 420 feet tall, planned by developer UPC Wind meet that description.

The board yesterday approved the project with 36 conditions, including noise limits from turbine operations and a UPC sponsored wildlife management plan.

Douglas says he hopes the decision does not open the door to many more large-scale wind farms in Vermont’s future.
