Battle rages over wind farm

Opponents and supporters of one of the West’s biggest wind farm schemes will put their cases at a planning inquiry which opens today at Burnham-on-Sea.

Controversy has raged over Ecotricity’s proposal for five 390ft turbines near Burnham-on-Sea which opponents say would ruin views of Brent Knoll, the dramatic landmark hill near the M5, and drive away tourists.

Sedgemoor district council rejected the scheme last August but Stroud-based Ecotricity is confident it can overcome objections.

The inquiry, which opens at the Princess Theatre, may last a week.

Green guru Dr David Bellamy, who has visited the site at Brent Marsh, backs opponents and has dubbed the plans “stupid” and accused the wind farm lobby of being part of a “big gravy train” created to make money.

Stroud-based Ecotricity says the turbines would produce enough electricity for 10,000 homes.
