Action group's blast at proposals for windfarms

Campaigners are warning that Stirlingshire’s countryside could be turned into a “giant forest of wind turbines”. Endrick Valley Action Group (EVAG) say developers npower renewables, who want to build a nine-turbine windfarm on Ballindalloch Muir near Balfron, have refused to rule out more turbines on the site. And the group says there are proposals for two other energy companies to build windfarms in the same area. Members of EVAG attended a series of exhibitions on the proposed windfarm in Fintry, . . . Wind farm debate rages in Cartier RM

Questions and concerns about a proposed wind farm in Rural Municipality of Cartier continue to stall a council vote on a zoning bylaw for the project. The 7,769-hectare wind farm proposed for the south side of Trans-Canada Highway between Dacotah and Elie is an issue of contention for many residents. Their concerns with the 63-turbine project range from health issues to the effects the structures may have on property values. Council halted a vote on a zoning bylaw for the . . . Complete story »

Locals running against the wind

A number of St. Joseph residents are not impressed with the proposed wind project in the area. BowArk Energy Ltd. plans to begin Phase 1 of the St. Joseph Wind Project next summer. When completed, there will be 43 wind turbines dotting 19,000 acres of countryside. They’ll be hard to miss, since they stand about 30 stories tall. About 120 landowners in the R.M. of Montcalm have already signed land lease contracts, allowing the developers to use their land in . . . Complete story »

Petition to stop wind farm work

Tourism bosses, councillors and action groups have joined together to ask the Welsh Assembly to intervene to stop work on the controversial Rhyl Flats wind farm project. On Monday, Llandudno’s mayor Alun Barrett presented a petition to Assembly Member Gareth Jones calling for the immediate cessation of work on the Constable Bank off Llandudno’s North Shore (pictured). They claim the dumping of thousands of tonnes of rock on the sea bed in readiness for the construction of the wind turbines, . . . Complete story »

Three turbines still no good, say protesters

A campaign group says its objections to a proposed windfarm site on the moors above Bacup still stand, despite a reduction in the number of turbines. London-based Coronation Power now wants to put three 410ft turbines on the moors between Britannia and Sharneyford, instead of the original four proposed. But the Friends of the South Pennines group says the reduction in the size of the windfarm will make little difference on its overall impact. Spokeswoman Denise McGowan said she believed . . . Citizens' group opposes Goodhue County wind farm

A citizens’ group that opposes construction of a nine-turbine wind farm in Goodhue County has petitioned a state commission to reconsider the decision granting a final site permit to the project. The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, which filed an order in July issuing the permit to Kenyon Wind LLC for the 18.9-megawatt wind-energy conversion system, is expected to discuss the group’s request during a commission meeting Thursday. Construction has not yet started on the wind turbines planned for sites east . . . Complete story »

Villagers get the wind-up over turbines

Plans to site wind turbines on the edge of Times Territory have sparked a stark warning. Campaigners claim that if the proposal is agreed it could spark a wave of applications around the county. Landowners R H Bott & Sons want to erect three 120-metre high (400 feet) turbines on high open land between Watton-at-Stone and Benington. The firm is expected to apply for planning permission next month. Protestors say the turbines will be visible from 10 miles away. They . . . Complete story »

Wind power plans for Highland beauty spot

Controversial plans for a giant windfarm development in a scenic area of Highland Perthshire have been lodged with Perth and Kinross Council. Northumberland-based energy giant AMEC plc wants to erect 14, 107-metre high turbines at Logiealmond on the Mansfield Estate, writes Les Stewart. The 28-megawatt scheme, which would operate for 20 years, could generate enough electricity to power around 15,600 households. If it replaced coal-fired generation it would save the emission of 63,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. The planning . . . Complete story »

PSC decision pleases neither side

Major players in the Jordanville Wind Farm controversy were left confused and disappointed following last week’s decision by the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) to approve the proposal with stipulations. Landowners, taxpayers and members of the Friends of Renewable Energy (FORE) were outraged with the decision to cut 19 turbines from the proposal, and also voiced concerns with the wording of the decision. “We’re going to do some investigating. We don’t understand the reasoning. FORE is going to . . . Complete story »

Wind farm foes consider appeal

The Wind Power Ethics Group is deciding this week if it will appeal a state Supreme Court judge’s decision that effectively allows wind farms close to Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Judge Hugh A. Gilbert handed down a decision Friday that upholds the town Zoning Board of Appeals’ February decision that classifies turbines as utilities under the town’s existing zoning law. Ethics Group Chairman Urban C. Hirschey said Tuesday afternoon that the group had not yet discussed the . . . Complete story »
