Villagers to vote on wind turbines

Residents of Syderstone are to go to the polls next month to have their say on controversial proposals to build a five wind turbine farm on agricultural land close to their community.

Syderstone Parish Meeting has called for the referendum on the possible development of the wind farm at Chiplow in the neighbouring parish of Bagthorpe with Barmer, adjacent to the Syderstone parish boundary.

The question being asked of the registered electors of the parish will be: “Do you want a Wind Farm at Chiplow, close to Syderstone village?”. There is a simple “yes” or “no” answer.

The poll will be on August 16 at the Amy Robstart village hall at The Street, Syderstone.

The station will be open from 4-9pm and there is no provision for poll cards or postal votes. Names of only those people entitled to vote will be on the official lists checked by the polling station officials.

Votes will be counted at the hall and it is anticipated that the result will be declared later that evening at approximately 9.30pm.

Energy provider E On UK has revealed plans to build a five wind turbine farm on land at Chiplow and hopes to submit a formal planning application this autumn.

An exhibition has already been staged in Syderstone Village Hall and has shown that the proposed scheme would provide sufficient electricity to supply around 5,000 homes, representing nine pc of the King’s Lynn and West Norfolk demand.

Other benefits claimed for the wind farm include combating global climate change by saving over 21,000 tonnes of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere each year..

Another benefit would be an annual £20,000 community fund for the lifetime of the project which is expected to be two decades.

Project leader Ali Parker said newsletters have been sent out to residents. The nearest house to the proposed scheme is 800 metres away and Syderstone village is more than one kilometre away.
