Firm fights back over wind farms

A company has defended plans for wind turbines on Calderdale’s border.

Planning applications have been submitted to Rossendale, Rochdale and Calderdale.

The company hopes to put five turbines on Todmorden Moor and others around Walsden, Rochdale and Rossendale and claims they will generate clean and sustainable energy, and tackle the harmful effects of climate change.

They are not being put where they will harm nationally protected landscapes, it says.

Coronation Power claims Todmorden Moor wind farm could produce 15 megawatts, powering approximately 8,300 homes – about 10 per cent of the Calderdale’s domestic consumption.

Building work could begin in the second half of 2008.

The company said that the need for renewable energy should be balanced with the impact on landscapes around Reaps Moss, Crook Hill and Todmorden Moor.

Its managaing director, Vickram Mirchandani, said: “Supporting the local wind farm proposal will send the message to future generations that we are trying to do something about the problem, that we are not being idle and self interested.”

Last month consultants, hired by the opposing councils, said they should reject the plans as they would blight the country- side and harm leisure opportunities.

The turbines, which measure 410ft to the tip of the rotor blades, would be more than twice the size of those at Ovenden Moor, Halifax.

Even the machine hubs would be only a fraction shorter than Wainhouse Tower, Halifax.
